Warning Signs Your Tree is Diseased

Bark

One of the more obvious signs to look for to determine the health of your tree is the bark. If you notice any peeling your tree may be at risk. Healthy, strong bark is intact and solid. Unhealthy bark is, well, peeling.

Tree bark is essential to tree health. You can liken bark to skin. It protects the inside of the tree just like our skin protects the inside of our body . Peeling bark and tree cankers are common signs that your tree needs attention.

Leaves

Depending on the type of tree you have and the disease inflicting it, will determine how your leaves will look if your tree is in fact diseased. Here are some common leaf appearances that may indicate a sick tree.

  • Spots or blemishes on the leaves.
  • Discoloration.
  • Defoliation, or premature loss of leaves.
  • Deformation in the shape of the leaves.

Branches

Having one branch that looks dead, doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem with the tree. Trees also have life cycles like any other living organism. However, if you are noticing multiple dead branches, this would be cause for alarm.

If your tree has dead branches they should be pruned; or removed. But don’t get going with that chainsaw just yet! Tree arborists specialize in the care of trees and can confidently determine just how much of the tree needs to be pruned, while still preserving the integrity.

Dead branches breaking and falling are a hazard and should be addressed immediately to ensure the safety of you, your family, and your property.
